SINGAPORE Oct 13 (Reuters) - Singapore's Neptune Orient Lines (NEPS.SI) (NOL), the world's fifth-biggest container shipping firm, said it carried 1 percent more containers in the four weeks to September 18 versus a year ago.

NOL said in a statement it carried the equivalent of 205,700 40-foot containers, or FEU, on its ships in the period, up from 204,000 a year earlier. This was the first year-on-year increase in 2009 amid a a global economic recovery.

"The increase in volume was mainly due to higher volumes lifted in several trade lanes. Lower average revenue per FEU was due to lower core freight rates and lower bunker recovery," the company said in a statement to the stock exchange.

The average revenue from each container fell 29 percent from a year ago to $2,247, but it was higher than the revenue per container recorded in the previous four week period to August 21 of $2,189. (Reporting by Harry Suhartono; Editing by Jan Dahinten)
