EU and U.S. plan intrusions on bank secrecy-paper

BERLIN Oct 15 (Reuters) - The Europan Union and the United States plan to give authorities increased powers to access banking data to fight funding for violent extremists, German business daily Handelsblatt said on Thursday.

Citing a draft document from the EU presidency, currently held by Sweden, the paper said officials tracking terror funding should have access to national databanks on banking information and not just the power to review international payments.

The proposal would mean U.S. authorities would be able to monitor banking transfers within Germany, the paper said in an advance excerpt from its Friday edition.

It gave no further details on the draft. (Writing by Dave Graham; Editing by Padraic Cassidy)
