Teamsters General President to Join Continental Fleet Workers for Major Campaign Announcement Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa will hold a press conference and attend a rally in support of Continental Airlines aviation technicians and fleet service workers who are fighting for strong representation in the workplace. During the rally, a major development in the organizing campaign for the fleet service workers will be announced. In his remarks, Hoffa will call on Continental to cease its anti-union activities targeting the fleet service workers and call for the company to negotiate in good faith with the aviation technicians. Newark Mayor Corey Booker will speak at the event in support for the workers. More than 8,000 Continental fleet service workers are exercising their right to join a union through a national organizing campaign. Under Hoffa's leadership, the workers hope to join their brother and sister aviation technicians at Continental who already are Teamsters. As the second largest Continental hub, 2,600 fleet service workers are employed in Newark. The 3,700 Continental aviation technicians are currently involved in ongoing negotiations with the company for a new contract. The workers made concessions in 2005 to help the airline survive the financial challenges it was experiencing at the time that still remain in place today. The union believes it is long past time to amend these concessions and reward the aviation technicians for their skill and dedication with a strong contract that ends the concessions. Hoffa will speak and be available for questions from the media at a press conference and rally on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Wyndham Garden Hotel Newark Airport. Members of the media may call in advance to schedule interviews for the day of the event. WHO: James P.
