BHP halts opencast mining at Khutala colliery

SYDNEY Oct 21 (Reuters) - BHP Billiton (BHP.AX) (BLT.L), the world's largest miner, has suspended opencast mining operations at its Khutala colliery in South Africa after a worker was killed in an accident, the company said on Wednesday.

A mining supervisor was killed after piece of coal fell from a truck onto the light vehicle he was driving at about 5am local time on Tuesday, it added.

"Mining at the opencast area has been suspended and investigations are underway," BHP Billiton said. (Reporting by Mark Bendeich; Editing by Jonathan Standing)
