Frost & Sullivan Recognizes Sensus With the 2009 North American Frost &
Sullivan Award for Business Development Strategy Leadership of the Year
Measurable Contributions to the Advanced Meter Infrastructure Market
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of
the U.S. advanced meter infrastructure (AMI) market, Frost & Sullivan
recognizes Sensus with the 2009 North American Frost & Sullivan Award for
Business Development Strategy Leadership of the Year for its ability to
strengthen its market share. The company's FlexNet(TM) tower-based AMI system
has lean architecture that leverages a powerful radio frequency to transmit
data, statistics, and other usage information for use by utilities and
consumers.

Sensus is a major participant in the AMI business and currently holds 23.2
percent market share in the U.S. market. As of 2008, the company had more than
2 million AMI SmartPoints installed. Some of Sensus' primary customers include
Southern Company, Hawaiian Electric Company, Alliant Energy, and Portland
General Electric. In addition to the FlexNet's state-of-art technology and
lean architecture, the company's vast industry experience provides a value
proposition in acquiring new customers.
"A pioneer in providing AMI solution in the United States, Sensus has
maintained a highly innovative approach for safer, reliable, and clear
transformation path for utilities," says Frost & Sullivan Senior Research
Analyst Vignesh Sundaram. "In addition, its tower-based network has proven to
be a cost-saver."
The Sensus FlexNet system uses a powerful radio frequency to transmit
information to the maximum range while also minimizing operational costs with
low infrastructure requirements. Sensus' FlexNet SmartPoints broadcast on a
licensed frequency that is protected by the Federal Communications Commission.
It allows a clear and uncluttered communication through the system. Compared
to other approaches, the network is highly secure and more reliable due to the
unshared primary use licensed spectrum. Sensus meters transmit the data
directly to the tower gateway base station (TGB), which communicates with the
Regional Network Interface (RNI) using a modem.
The company has also enhanced its business development strategy by forming an
alliance with other industry participants for improving its service
operability and reliability. In April 2009, Sensus entered into an alliance
with Telemetric Corporation to integrate Sensus FlexNet RF technology device
into Telemetric's intelligent communications devices to provide distribution
automation solutions for electric utility smart grid applications. Telemetric
provides proven communication solutions for the smart grid applications using
commercial cellular networks. Sensus subsequently acquired Telemetric.
"The alliance will support Sensus with distribution assets and capabilities to
interface with utility Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)
systems," notes Sundaram. "It will also help Sensus to acquire new clients, as
Telemetric has a vast relationship with utilities and utility equipment
providers."
In January 2009, Sensus entered a strategic partnership with 4Home, Inc. to
create Home Area Network (HAN) and Demand Response (DR) solutions for the
utilities. 4Home is the leading provider of home control services, which
include energy management, home security and monitoring, media and
entertainment management and home health. 4Home has a proven standard-based
control platform that is scalable, reliable and easy to use. This partnership
is expected to deliver simple and powerful energy management and conservation
programs for the electricity consumers.
For providing state-of-the-art technology at cost-effective prices and
consistently innovating to sustain and grow its market share, Sensus is the
deserving recipient of the 2009 Frost & Sullivan Award for Business
Development Strategy Leadership of the Year in the U.S. AMI market.
Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has
demonstrated excellence in business development within the industry. The award
recognizes the company's ability to best perceive consumer needs, develop
products and/or services that meet consumer needs, successfully introduce
products or services to the industry, and identify new market segments to
expand the existing customer base. Through a combination of vision,
technology, and successful marketing, the award recipient has demonstrated
superior market growth skills.
Frost & Sullivan's Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of
regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and
superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation,
customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare
