NEW NATIONAL CAMPAIGN - "BEING A WOMAN IS NOT A PRE-EXISTING CONDITION" TO BE LAUNCHED ON OCTOBER 20 Rape Survivor Denied Coverage for "Pre-existing Condition" Shares Her Story National Women's Law Center (NWLC) Co-President Marcia Greenberger, Chrissy Turner - a rape survivor who was denied coverage by an insurance company because of her "pre-existing condition" - and a group of women take to the steps of the U.S. Capitol to launch a new public awareness campaign, "Being a Woman is Not a Pre-Existing Condition." They want to encourage women to make their voices heard by demanding that Congress pass health care reform legislation that works for women and their families. The "Being a Woman is Not a Pre-Existing Condition" campaign will inspire women to take action by educating them about the disparities women face in the health insurance market. In addition to announcing the new campaign, NWLC will release new research about gender discrimination in the health insurance market as a follow-up to its landmark 2008 "Nowhere to Turn" research report. The Center was the first to reveal that women are charged as much as 48% more for individual insurance than men and are routinely denied coverage for so-called pre-existing conditions, including a past C-section or status as a domestic abuse survivor.
