Oct 20 (Reuters) - Medical device maker NuVasive Inc (NUVA.O) posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit, helped by a 42 percent rise in revenue and lower operating expenses, and raised its 2009 outlook.
For the third quarter, the company reported a net income of $5.1 million, or 13 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $23 million, or 64 cents per share, a year ago.
Excluding litigation costs, reversal of leasehold termination charge, acquisition and including stock option and amortization of intangibles, the company earned 11 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S data.
Revenue rose 42 percent to $94.9 million.
Analysts on average had expected the company to earn 5 cents per share, excluding special items but including stock-based compensation expense, on revenue of $92.9 million.
The company raised its 2009 outlook, excluding adjusted earnings, to a range of 27 cents to 30 cents a share, from its prior view of 25 cents to 27 cents a share.
It also expects revenue of $365 million to $367 million, up from its previous forecast of $360 million to $365 million for 2009.
