Oct 20 (Reuters) - Conceptus Inc (CPTS.O) posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit, helped by more doctors performing its permanent birth control method and cost savings, and raised its 2009 earnings view.
For the third quarter, the contraception device maker reported a net income of $6.2 million or 20 cents a share, compared with a net income of $2 million, or 6 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter.
Revenue rose 29 percent to $34.2 million.
Analysts on average expected earnings of 9 cents a share, excluding special items, on revenue of $33.1 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
The company said it now expects higher fiscal 2009 earnings in the range of 23 cents to 25 cents a share, up from its prior view of 13 cents to 22 cents a share.
It saw 2009 sales of $131.9 million to $132.4 million, from its prior view of $130 million to $133 million.
Conceptus sees fourth-quarter earnings per share between 19 and 21 cents.
The company said the domestic sales growth in the third quarter reflected continued increases in both the number of physicians entering and completing training, and in the number of certified physicians performing its Essure birth control procedure in-office.
Shares of the company closed at $19.02 Wednesday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Krishnakali Sengupta in Bangalore; Editing by Unnikrishnan Nair)
