UPDATE 1-Temple Inland Q3 profit beats Wall St.

* Q3 EPS ex-items of 24 cts tops Wall St view of 18 cts

* Revenues fall 9 pct

NEW YORK Oct 22 (Reuters) - Corrugated packaging and building products maker Temple-Inland Inc TIN.N posted better than expected third quarter earnings as strong box and food container profits offset weakness in building products.

Net income jumped to $67 million, or 61 cents per share, from $3 million, or 3 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter

Excluding one-time items, earnings were 24 cents per share, topping analysts' average forecast of 18 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenues fell 9 percent to $885 million, topping the $876 million that analysts had predicted. (Reporting by Matt Daily, editing by Gerald E. McCormick)
