The Chinese firm signed the contract with state utility Vietnam Electricity group. Under the deal it would build the 1,244-megawatt coal-fired Vinh Tan 2 plant in Binh Thuan province, the English-language daily said.
Vinh Tan 2, one of three power plants in Binh Thuan's Vinh Tan power complex, is scheduled to become operational in 2013 to supply electricity to Vietnam's southern region.
Shanghai Electric is engaged in the design, manufacture and sale of a range of products and services in the power equipment, electro-mechanical equipment, and transportation equipment industries. (Reporting by Ho Binh Minh; Editing by Paul Tait)
