TOKYO Oct 26 (Reuters) - Japan's top oil and gas explorer Inpex Corp (1605.T) said on Monday it stopped oil output from the Griffin oil fields in offshore Western Australia on Friday after 15 years of commercial production. Inpex has a 20 percent interest in the Griffin oil fields, comprising the Griffin, Scindian and Chinook fields.

BHP Billion (BHP.AX) has a 45 percent stake, while oil major ExxonMobil (XOM.N) has 35 percent. Output reached a peak of more than 80,000 barrels per day in the early stage of of the project but has declined to less than 4,000 bpd this year due to natural depletion, Inpex said.

Production from the fields totalled 178 million barrels of crude oil equivalent, it said. (Reporting by Osamu Tsukimori; Editing by Michael Watson)
