NEW YORK, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Insurer Unum Group (UNM.N) (UNM.N) said on Tuesday quarterly net income more than doubled, helped by investment gains.

Unum, a large U.S. disability insurer, said third-quarter net profit rose to $221.1 million, or 66 cents a share, from $108 million or 32 cents a share, in the year-earlier quarter.

The Chattanooga, Tennessee-based insurer recorded adjusted operating earnings, excluding investment gains or losses, of $211.6 million, or 64 cents a share, compared with $216.9 million, or 64 cents a share, last year.

On that basis, the results matched analysts' expectations, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Shares fell 4 cents to $20.19 in the regular session on Tuesday, and eased a further 5 cents in after-hours trading.
