SYDNEY Nov 5 (Reuters) - David Jones Ltd (DJS.AX), Australia's second-largest department store chain, reported total sales for the first quarter rose 2.2 percent and said it had had a good start as it heads into Christmas.

Chief Executive Mark McInnes said in a statement on Thursday it is too early to provide an update to guidance until the company has traded through the second quarter.

Current guidance is for up to 5 percent growth in net profit for fiscal 2010. (Reporting by Morag MacKinnon)
