UPDATE 1-Kendle Q3 profit beats Street

* Q3 adj EPS $0.71 beats Street by 33 cents

* Net service revenue falls 16 pct to $104.6 mln

* Shares up 4 pct in extended trade

Nov 4 (Reuters) - Kendle International KNDL.O, a provider of clinical-development services to biopharmaceutical firms, posted a quarterly profit much above Wall Street estimates, helped by cost cuts.

For the third quarter, the company reported a net income of $8.8 million, or 59 cents a share, compared with $9.4 million, or 62 cents, a year ago.

Excluding items it earned 71 cents a share.

Net service revenue fell 16 percent to $104.6 million.

Analysts on average expected earnings of 38 cents a share, excluding special items, on revenue of $103.6 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

For the third quarter, costs and expenses fell 28 percent to $118.2 million.

Shares of the company were up 4 percent at $17.16 in after-market trade. They closed at $16.48 Wednesday on Nasdaq.
