NEW YORK Nov 5 (Reuters) - Respiratory equipment maker ResMed Inc (RMD.N) reported better-than-expected quarterly profit that jumped 50 percent, helped by double-digit sales growth in the Americas.

The company, which makes masks and devices to assist sleep disordered breathing in people who suffer from sleep apnea, said on Thursday its net profit rose to $42.1 million, or 55 cents per share, for the quarter ended Sept. 30, from $28 million, or 36 cents per share, a year ago.

Analysts on average expected the San Diego-based company to earn 50 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue for the quarter rose 13 percent to $247 million, topping Wall Street estimates of $239.5 million.

Sales in North and South America jumped 19 percent to $134.7 million.

Sales outside the Americas, which were hurt by the strength of the dollar against the euro, rose 8 percent to $112.3 million.

Sales, general and administrative costs rose 8 percent to $76.8 million for the quarter, reflecting expenses necessary to support sales growth, the company said. (Reporting by Bill Berkrot; editing by Tim Dobbyn and Andre Grenon)
