U.S. Chamber/Health Care Reform -- Faith-Based Investors Asking Top U.S.
Companies to Clarify If Chamber's Opposition Reflects Their Views
Efforts Focusing on 30 Companies That Have Agreed to Health Care Principles
That Are Inconsistent With Chamber Position; The Question: Does the Chamber
Speak For You?
In the face of an aggressive U.S. Chamber of Commerce lobbying blitz to kill
health care reform legislation in Congress, faith-based institutional
investors belonging to the 300-member Interfaith Center on Corporate
Responsibility (ICCR) will announce that they are formally asking 30 major
publicly traded companies to clarify whether or not the Chamber speaks for
them on health care reform.
According to ICCR, all of the companies -- including American Express, DuPont,
Eli Lilly and Xerox -- have agreed as a result of shareholder engagement to
embrace health care principles that are at odds with the anti-reform efforts
of the U.S. Chamber. The companies in question are being asked to clarify if
their position on health care reform is being reflected by the U.S. Chamber
and, if not, to make a public statement to that effect.
News event speakers will be:
-- Laura Berry, executive director, Interfaith Center on Corporate
Responsibility;
-- Edward Gerardo, director, Community and Social Investments, Bon
Secours
Health System, Inc.; and
-- Donna Meyer, Ph.D., former senior system director, Community Health,
CHRISTUS Health.
