Invitation to Attend "The Rising Tide at Copenhagen: A 'Win-Win' Solution for
Industrialized and Developing Nations in a Changing World" Luncheon at the
United Nations




    WHAT:       Invitation to attend a luncheon at the United Nations on
                behalf of The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) and
                Columbia University Consortium for Risk Management on "The
                Rising Tide at Copenhagen: A 'Win-Win' Solution for
                Industrialized and Developing Nations in a Changing World."

                AOSIS is a coalition of small island and low-lying coastal
                countries that share similar development challenges and
                concerns about the environment, especially their vulnerability
                to the adverse effects of global climate change caused by
                developing countries such as the United States and China.
                AOSIS membership of 42 States and observers, and 37 are
                members of the United Nations, close to 20% of the UN's total
                membership.

                Dr. Chichilnisky will explain her proposal for a new financial
                mechanism that is mutually beneficial to the US and China
                while helping to diffuse their emissions standoff, and how the
                Small Island States can play a key role in the climate
                negotiations. She will be joined by other scholars, diplomats,
                and business leaders who will address a new technical and
                financial proposal to help Small Island States respond to
                climate risk. Dr. Chichilnisky is a lead author of the
                Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and creator and
                designer of the carbon market established in the aftermath of
                the Kyoto Conference.
