Background

The Department of Industrial Relations is proud to announce the launch of the
2009 "I Built It - Youth" public awareness campaign for California`s youth. The
Campaign is designed to promote careers in the construction trades through
apprenticeship opportunities.

The campaign will include an energetic and age appropriate video which presents
the concept of apprenticeships to students. This dynamic and engaging video
features apprentices working in the field and highlighting the benefits of
participating in an apprenticeship program. Superintendent of Schools Jack
O`Connell has committed to show video to each middle and high school student in
the state.

The event will include live, interactive demonstrations of various trades for
the students and a photo display of construction projects highlighting
apprenticeship training and skills.

Apprenticeship programs statewide will present demonstrations on their
respective crafts such as Operating engineers, Sheet Metal, Carpenters, Pile
Drivers, Electricians, and Plumbers.

The interactive demonstrations will provide a visual backdrop for interviews
about the terrific opportunities in the building and construction trades. An
invitation was extended to Governor Schwarzenegger to be the featured guest.
Superintendent of Schools Jack O`Connell, Secretary of Education Dr. Glen
Thomas, Acting Secretary of the Labor and Workforce Development Agency Doug
Hoffner have confirmed their attendance for the event.
