CORRECTION - WASHINGTON - Obama renews longstanding Iran sanctions

WASHINGTON | Thu Nov 12, 2009 5:47pm EST

WASHINGTON Nov 12 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Thursday renewed longstanding U.S. economic sanctions against Iran, the White House said.

Obama notified Congress that, as expected, he was extending existing U.S. measures against Tehran for another year, saying "our relations with Iran have not yet returned to normal."

Obama has sought to reach out diplomatically to Iran since taking power in January but the West remains locked in a dispute with Tehran over its nuclear program. (Reporting by Matt Spetalnick)
