BRUSSELS Nov 19 (Reuters) - Sweden is proposing Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy for the post of EU president and Britain's Catherine Ashton to become the EU's foreign policy chief, diplomats said on Thursday.

"(Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik) Reinfeldt is currently briefing European Parliament President (Jerzy) Buzek and is informing him of his intention to put forward the name of Van Rompuy and Ashton," an EU diplomat diplomat said.

Another diplomat said: "It looks like there is a critical mass of support for Van Rumpuy and Ashton, but it is not yet certain since they are still in the meeting."
