NEW YORK Nov 23 (Reuters) - SCANA Corp's (SCG.N) 966-megawatt Summer nuclear power station in South Carolina was in cold shutdown on Nov. 22 when a fire broke out in a switchgear room, a spokesman for the plant said Monday.

The plant was in the later stages of a refueling outage but he could not say when it would return to service.

The unit shut for the refuel by Oct. 16. The unit last shut for refueling from about April 25 to June 16, 2008. It is on an 18-month refueling cycle.

Workers were still looking into the damage but noted the company would likely have to fix at least some equipment before restarting the plant, the spokesman said

The fire damaged three nonsafety related switchgear rooms on the secondary, or non-nuclear, side of the plant. The three rooms, which are each smaller than a standard office cubical, feed power to internal systems, the spokesman said.

The fire did not cause any injuries, did not pose any danger to the public and did not cause a release of radiation, the spokesman said.

The company called the local fire department to help fight the fire, which lasted less than an hour, and declared an unusual event, the lowest of four U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission emergency classifications.
