Spain supports Eurogroup chair Juncker reelection

BRUSSELS Dec 1 (Reuters) - Spain would be happy to see the chairman of euro zone finance ministers, Jean-Claude Juncker, reelected for the job under the rules of the Lisbon Treaty which enters into force on Tuesday, Span's finance minister said.

"If he is the candidate, we are happy with his candidacy," Elena Selgado told reporters before a meeting of the euro zone ministers on Tuesday.

"I think he will be reelected as soon as he presents his candidacy," she said.

The Lisbon treaty streamlines decision-making in the 27-nation bloc and strengthens some of its institutions. It also lengthens the term of the chairman of the Eurogroup to 2-1/2 years from 2 years.

Juncker was chosen for the job in the second half of 2008 for two full years, until the end of 2010. It was immediately not clear from a legal point of view if the entry into force of the new treaty made it necessary to re-elect the chairman for a new 2-1/2-year term or let him finish his term at the end of 2010, euro zone sources have said.
