Canada says will reallocate unused stimulus cash

WINNIPEG, Manitoba | Wed Dec 2, 2009 2:15pm EST

WINNIPEG, Manitoba Dec 2 (Reuters) - Unused Canadian stimulus funds could be diverted to other uses such as more benefits for the unemployed or university infrastructure, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said on Wednesday.

"If money is not used, then we can use it in other parts where we might need it. If we have persisting unemployment, of course, on EI (employment insurance) benefits," Flaherty told reporters after delivering a speech.

He said more money could be committed to areas that have already used up 100 percent of allocated funds, such as post-secondary institution infrastructure. "There may have to be some shifting around of funds, if money isn't spent by March 2011."
