LONDON, Dec 2 (Reuters) - British investment bank Numis (NUM.L) swung to an annual pretax loss after a hit from investments and charges but reported an "excellent" start to the year and robust second half.

"We are encouraged by the improved market conditions during the second half and have taken full advantage of the opportunity to grow our secondary market business," Chief Executive Oliver Hemsley said.

The company reported an adjusted pretax profit of 4.2 million pounds ($6.96 million) in the year to end September, compared with 8.4 million last year. But investment losses and charges brought the company to a statutory pretax loss of 10.5 million pounds against revenue of 47.5 million pounds.

Numis said it has raised its final dividend by 10 percent to 5.50 pence.
