UPDATE 1-US FDA: Glaxo warns of heart risk from HIV drug

WASHINGTON | Thu Dec 3, 2009 12:41pm EST

WASHINGTON Dec 3 (Reuters) - GlaxoSmithKline (GSK.L) has warned of a possible link between its HIV drug Lexiva and heart attacks in HIV-infected adults, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Thursday.

The company said the drug has also been seen to raise cholesterol levels. It recommended doctors check cholesterol levels in patients before treatment with Lexiva (fosamprenavir), as well as monitor patients for high blood pressure, diabetes and smoking, which can also lead to heart disease.

Lexiva is a protease inhibitor that prevents HIV from multiplying. ((Company news desk in Washington, +1 202 898 8400, washington.newsroom@thomsonreuters.com))
