SHANGHAI Dec 4 (Reuters) - General Motors Co [GM.UL] said it would hold a media briefing at 5 p.m. (0900 GMT) on Friday on "some important GM news", a day after sources with knowledge of the situation said it was nearing a deal to sell majority control of its China venture to Chinese partner SAIC.

GM said the media briefing would be hosted by Nick Reilly, GM executive vice president and president of GM International Operations.

The sources said on Thursday that GM was close to a deal with SAIC Motor Corp (600104.SS), China's biggest automaker, which would also transfer half of GM's India operations to the Chinese company.
