Tremors hit northern Malawi, some injuries
BLANTYRE |
BLANTYRE (Reuters) - Several tremors hit the Karonga district north of Malawi on Sunday injuring at least two people and forcing many on to the streets, officials said.
Enock Levason, a police officer in Karonga said tremors were still being felt there at around 2000 GMT and people were out in the streets, afraid that their houses might collapse.
Local media said two people were injured and taken to hospital.
Residents in Mzuzu, Malawi's third city, also felt the tremors.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported four earthquakes measuring between 5.1 and 5.8 north of Mzuzu.
In 1989, a 6.6 earthquake killed at least 9 people and injured 100 and left another 50,000 homeless, according to the USGS.
