WASHINGTON Dec 7 (Reuters) - A magnitude 5.9 quake struck northern Malawi on Tuesday, close to the Tanzanian border, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake, only 6.2 miles (10 km) deep, followed a series of quakes in the same area, the uranium-rich Karonga district, for two days running.

The epicenter was 110 miles (175 km) north of Mzuzu and 75 miles (125 km) southeast of the Tanzanian town of Mbeya.
