THE HAGUE, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Dutch telecoms group KPN (KPN.AS) said on Tuesday it wants to connect up to 1.3 million Dutch homes to an optical high-speed data network by the end of 2012, up from about 460,000 users currently.
KPN said it will commit to a gradual fibre-to-the-home roll-out through its Reggefiber joint venture which was established last year and in which KPN holds a 41 percent stake.
"By 2012, KPN targets some 600,000 to 800,000 active customers on fibre-to-the-home and fibre-to-the-curb combined, roughly corresponding to 10 percent of Dutch households," the former Dutch telecoms monopoly said in a statement.
The Netherlands, with 16.4 million people and close to 80 percent of households connected, has one of the highest fixed-line broadband penetration rates in the world but connections on its fibre network lag behind some other countries such as Sweden and Japan. Connecting Dutch households to the fibre network costs about 1,000 euros per household in urbanised areas. (Reporting by Harro ten Wolde; Editing by Greg Mahlich)
