FACTBOX: Facts about the Golden Globe Awards

LOS ANGELES | Tue Dec 15, 2009 3:00pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Golden Globe Awards, whose nominations were announced on Tuesday, are given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and have become a key indicator of which films will compete for the Academy Awards, the world's top film awards.

Following are some facts about the Golden Globe awards.

* The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is based in Los Angeles and includes about 90 journalists who write for various newspapers and magazines around the world.

* The HFPA was formed in 1943 as a way for international journalists to band together, exchange ideas and gain access to Hollywood stars.

* Golden Globe Awards are given out in both film and television categories, and the ceremony is broadcast annually to tens of millions of television viewers around the world.

* The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be handed out on January 17 in Beverly Hills.

* The Golden Globe Awards have a history of nominating many of the same movies that receive Oscar nominations. As a result, the Golden Globes are considered a key indicator of movies that will compete for Oscars, which will be given out in March 2010 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
