CAIRO Dec 21 (Reuters) - The total number of Egyptian mobile phone subscribers fell to 52.978 million in October, a government website said on Monday.

More than a million accounts had been created every month since late last year, but some 450,000 accounts had been closed in during the month.

A year ago, there were 37.626 million subscribers, the government-run Egyptian Cabinet Information and Decision Support Centre said on its website (www.eip.gov.eg).

The mobile landscape is underdeveloped compared with Egypt's regional peers but fiercely competitive, with three operators offering on-network discounts to garner customers. (Reporting by Mohamed Samir)
