WASHINGTON Dec 24 (Reuters) - The top U.S. housing regulator said on Thursday it approved multimillion dollar pay packages for the chief executives of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Federal Housing Finance Agency acting director Edward DeMarco said compensation packages for top executives were 40 percent lower than what their predecessors earned before the government seized the two agencies in September 2008. (Reporting by Corbett B. Daly; Editing by Padraic Cassidy)
