KAILUA, Hawaii (Reuters) - Vacationing U.S. President Barack Obama interrupted a golf game on Monday and sped back to his holiday house after the child of a friend was hurt in a beach accident, the White House said.

"The first family is fine," White House spokesman Bill Burton said.

Obama and his entourage returned to the golf course after the quick trip to his Hawaii residence. Earlier an ambulance with flashing lights drove past a van of reporters to the president's house and left several minutes later.

An administration official said the injured child's father had been in the president's golf party, necessitating the quick trip to the house.

The child was going to get some stitches, the official said. Previously planned activities -- such as the golf game -- resumed.
