TOKYO Jan 8 (Reuters) - Japan's top government spokesman said on Friday it was undesirable for the government to make comments that affect currency rates.

Finance Minister Naoto Kan called on Thursday for a weaker yen and said he would work with the Bank of Japan to achieve an appropriate exchange rate level, prompting a sharp slide in the currency against the dollar. [ID:nTOE60607E]

Asked about Kan's remarks, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirofumi Hirano told a news conference: "I think he was speaking in terms of the views of the business community." (Reporting by Leika Kihara, Rie Ishiguro)
