* Q4 global PC shipments up 15.2 pct yr/yr - IDC
* U.S. shipments jump 24 pct, helped by low-cost notebooks
* HP remains market leader
NEW YORK, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Global shipments of personal computers jumped 15.2 percent in the fourth quarter from a year earlier, helped by strong U.S. holiday sales of low-cost notebooks, according to IDC's quarterly survey released on Wednesday.
The research firm said sales of low-cost notebook computers during the holiday season helped drive U.S. shipments up by a higher-than-expected 24 percent.
IDC research manager David Daoud said a big contraction in sales a year ago contributed to the strong, year-on-year gain in the U.S. market, but that the introduction of lower price points stimulated demand.
"In this context, low-cost notebooks and mini-notebooks were the biggest contributors to the successful fourth quarter. Once again, the consumer market overcame the weak commercial sector to save the quarter," he said.
Hewlett-Packard Co (HPQ.N) solidified its leadership in global market share, with 20.7 percent compared with 19.6 percent a year earlier.
Acer Inc (2353.TW), with 13.4 percent of worldwide market share, grabbed the second spot from Dell Inc (DELL.O) whose share fell to 12.5 percent from 13.6 percent a year earlier.
Lenovo Group (0992.HK) and Toshiba Corp (6502.T) were in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
