Citigroup building in Haiti collapses
NEW YORK |
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Citigroup Inc's main building in Haiti suffered extensive damage after an earthquake late on Tuesday, according to an internal memo, and the bank is trying to track down its 44 employees in the nation.
"Our top priority is to ensure that our colleagues are safe and accounted for," the memo said.
The earthquake's epicenter was 10 miles from Haitian capital city Port-Au-Prince, where Citigroup had a three-story building. The earthquake may have killed tens of thousands of people and was the most powerful in Haiti in more than a century.
Citigroup is sending a team with medical equipment, humanitarian supplies, and satellite phones to Haiti, to help the company's employees and support emergency response efforts, the memo said.
