Factbox: Companies offer aid to Haiti after earthquake
(Reuters) - A magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked Haiti on Tuesday, killing thousands and demolishing schools, hospitals, houses and hillside shantytowns.
The following are some of the companies pledging aid:
- Unilever will donate $500,000 through its partnership with the United Nations World Food Program.
- The Humana Foundation will contribute $100,000 for support of earthquake-relief efforts and match dollar-for-dollar contributions from its associates up to $50,000.
- Kraft Foods Foundation is donating $200,000 to the American Red Cross for relief efforts. The company also said it has a special 2:1 match for employees' donations up to $100,000 -- bringing the total matching component to $300,000.
- Toys"R"Us Children's Fund, a public charity affiliated with Toys R Us Inc said it will contribute $150,000 to help Save the Children in its efforts to provide immediate relief to victims of the earthquake.
- Safeway Inc said the Safeway Foundation will make an initial contribution of $100,000 to the American Red Cross and UNICEF. The company said its stores throughout the U.S. and Canada will immediately begin collecting donations for Haiti Disaster Relief through a checkstand program.
In addition, Safeways corporate offices and other non-store facilities will conduct employee fundraisers.
- Biotechnology company Amgen Inc said it will donate $2 million to the relief efforts.
- The PepsiCo Foundation said it will donate $1 million to the earthquake victims and that the food and beverage company PepsiCo will provide Quaker products as well as bottled water and Gatorade for the disaster victims through its bottlers in Florida and the Dominican Republic.
- JP Morgan Chase said it would commit $1 million to the relief and recovery of the country.
- General Mills Foundation said it will contribute $250,000 to support the disaster relief and rebuilding efforts.
- Giageo Plc, the world's biggest alcoholic drinks group, said it is delivering more than 45,000 pounds of food and emergency supplies to the earthquake victims on Friday.
- AstraZeneca Plc said it is making a donation of 100,000 pounds to the British Red Cross Emergency Appeal.
- American Airlines said it will impose a 30-day bag embargo on all excess, oversize, and overweight baggage on flights to Santo Domingo, Santiago and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.
This embargo will also apply to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, when service resumes there, it added.
- McDonald's Corp and its franchise Arcos Dorados will together contribute at least $1 million to help the victims of the earthquake.
- United Technologies Corp said it will match 100 percent of individual contributions to Red Cross relief efforts up to $250 per employee, for a program maximum of $250,000 in matching funds.
- Yum Brands Inc said it is directing $500,000 from its World Hunger Relief global effort to provide food for the earthquake victims.
- Morgan Stanley will contribute $1 million to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund to support relief efforts in Haiti.
- Investment bank Jefferies Group Inc said it will donate all net commission revenue globally and volunteered salaries for the day on January 15, plus $1 million, for relief efforts.
The bank said the contribution will be split evenly between The American Red Cross, UNICEF, Save the Children and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).
- Google Inc is donating $1 million to organizations engaged in disaster response in Haiti and has published a link on its home page directing users to a page with information on how to make donations.
- U.S. health insurer Aetna Inc said The Aetna Foundation has initiated a dollar-for-dollar match for employee disaster relief donations for relief efforts.
Aetnas Community Relations group has activated its 47 Aetna Volunteer Councils to engage with relief agencies to respond to this disaster by collecting goods and funds.
- Nestle Waters North America will donate $1 million in bottled water products to support disaster relief efforts.
- Digicel Group, a mobile phone operator in Haiti, is donating $5 million in cash toward relief efforts.
- Eli Lilly & Co will provide $250,000 in direct cash contributions and said it will also match contributions of its U.S. employees, up to a total of $250,000.
- Verizon Wireless said its customers have pledged more than $1 million by texting HAITI to 90999. It said all mobile texters in the United States have contributed more than $4 million to the Red Cross relief for Haiti campaign.
- AT&T Inc said The AT&T Foundation is providing a $50,000 donation to Telecoms Sans Frontieres (TSF) to support their relief work on disasters in Haiti.
Wireless customers of AT&T can donate $10 by texting HAITI to 90999.
- Deutsche Post DHL, the express mail and logistics services group, said it has sent in the first logistics team for on-the-ground logistics support to the relief effort in Haiti.
- Rogers Communications will contribute $250,000 in funds and goods to Partners In Health: Haiti and other relief organizations. It said Rogers Wireless and Fido customers can donate C$5 by texting HELP to 1291.
- CIBC and FirstCaribbean International Bank will donate C$100,000 to the Haiti earthquake relief efforts.
- Goldman Sachs & Co is contributing $1 million to the relief efforts in Haiti through American Red Cross for the Haitian Relief and Development Fund, CARE and other organizations.
- Target Corp will donate $500,000 to the American Red Cross to assist with disaster recovery in Haiti.
- Procter & Gamble Co said it will provide at least 2 million packets of PUR Purifier of Water through our Children's Safe Drinking Water partners. It said Duracell has already provided $200,000 worth of batteries and flashlights for donation.
- National Bank of Canada will contribute up to C$250,000 to the Canadian Red Cross. National Bank MasterCard cardholders can exchange reward points, free of charge, for a cash donation to the Canadian Red Cross by calling 514-847-8280 or 1-800-341-8083.
- The New York Yankees will donate $500,000 in support of rescue and relief efforts.
- FedEx Corp is working with international relief groups, including the Red Cross, to fly supplies to Haiti.
- United Parcel Service Inc, which participates in a World Food Program that helps coordinate delivery of aid to disaster zones, said it expects to have its volunteers in the program called up soon. It will also provide $1 million in aid, half in cash and half in services.
- 3M Co, which makes bandages and other products used in skin and wound care, is working with relief agencies to see what medical products it can provide. 3M said it would likely also make a monetary contribution.
- Scotiabank (Bank of Nova Scotia) is accepting donations for the Canadian Red Cross' Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund at its bank branches and making a C$250,000 corporate contribution.
- The General Motors Foundation is making a $100,000 contribution to the American Red Cross relief fund. GM has provided an Internet link so its employees can contribute to the Red Cross.
- Campbell Soup Co is contributing at least $200,000 and putting a mechanism in place for employees to make contributions.
- Wells Fargo & Co is donating $100,000 to the American Red Cross relief fund.
- Wal-Mart Stores Inc is donating $500,000 to Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti and sending prepackaged food kits valued at $100,000 to Haiti at the request of the Red Cross.
The world's biggest retailer has launched an Internet page, www.walmartstores.com/haiti, where customers and employees can make donations to nonprofits supporting relief efforts.
- Lowe's Cos Inc is donating $1 million to the Red Cross' efforts in Haiti. The No. 2 U.S. home improvement chain also plans to seek cash donations from its customers.
- American Airlines, a unit AMR Corp, scheduled three flights to Port-au-Prince on Wednesday with 10,000 pounds of aid, including material for hospitals. Three more flights are scheduled for Thursday.
American is working with the Red Cross on a program through which members can make donations toward relief in return for frequent flier miles. American has 100 employees in Haiti.
- ConAgra Foods Foundation said it would pledge $100,000 to the International Red Cross Relief Fund.
- Cereal maker Kellogg Co will donate $250,000 to the American Red Cross for its relief effort.
- Bank of America Corp has committed $1 million to the effort with half going to the American Red Cross for the Haitian Relief and Development fund.
- Drugmaker Abbott Laboratories will provide $1 million in humanitarian aid, including donations of medicines and nutritional products.
- BMO Financial Group pledged $250,000 to Red Cross effort in Haiti.
- Internet services company Go Daddy will donate $500,000 to aid quake victims.
- Rogers Communications and the Rogers family will donate $250,000 in funds and goods to Partners In Health :Haiti and other relief organizations.
- Home Depot and the Home Depot Foundation will donate $100,000 to the American Red Cross for relief efforts in Haiti.
- Walt Disney Co pledged $100,000 in humanitarian aid.
