WASHINGTON | Sat Jan 23, 2010 11:55pm EST

WASHINGTON Jan 23 (Reuters) - A United Airlines UAUA.O flight from Washington to Las Vegas was diverted to Denver on Saturday after a passenger tried to open an exterior door of the plane while in flight, the Denver Post reported.

The plane landed safely at Denver International Airport and the suspect was taken into custody for questioning, the Post said, citing an airline spokesman.

Denver airport spokesman Jeff Green was quoted as saying, "It's virtually impossible to open an exterior door while in flight."
