Jan 27 (Reuters) - Heartland Express Inc's (HTLD.O) fourth-quarter profit nearly halved as a weak freight environment continued to weigh on the truckload carrier.
However, the company said freight volumes have stabilized based on the current economic environment. But it was unable, at this time, to project when the volumes would improve, it added.
Heartland's fourth-quarter net income was $10.7 million, or 12 cents a share, compared with $19.4 million, or 20 cents a share, a year ago.
Operating revenue fell 20 percent to $114.2 million.
Analysts were expecting earnings of 15 cents a share on revenue of $119.8 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Shares of the company were down 26 cents at $14.78 Wednesday on Nasdaq.
