UPDATE 1-Riversdale plans Mozambique coal exports by 2011
* India to be key market for coal exports
* Coal-powered plant to be joint venture project
(Adds details)
CAPE TOWN, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Australia-listed Riversdale Mining RIV.AX plans to start exporting 2.0 million tonnes of coal from Mozambique by the end of 2011 and to boost this to 5.0 million tonnes by 2013, a company executive said on Wednesday.
Riversdale's Chief Financial Officer Niall Lenahan told Reuters at a mining conference in Cape Town the company would also seek joint venture partners to build a 500 megawatt coal-powered plant to export electricity to South Africa.
Lenahan said the Benga power plant would be constructed next to the Benga coal mine currently under development in Mozambique and which will start production before the end of this year.
"We received mining and regulatory approvals and we are spending $270 million to develop the mine. Our plans are to raise production further beyond 2013 during stage three of the project," Lenahan said.
Lenahan said India would be a major market for the company because of its increasing coal demand, with steel manufacturers and power producers in the southern Africa region and other parts of the world also likely to purchase Riverdale's coal.
