UPDATE 1-ADC Q1 adj profit tops Street

Feb 8 (Reuters) - ADC Telecommunications ADCT.O posted a better-than-expected adjusted quarterly profit, helped partly by tighter cost controls, sending the network equipment maker's shares up 3 percent after the bell.

For the first quarter ended Jan. 1, the company's net loss attributable to shareholders fell to $11.2 million, or 11 cents per share, from $49.7 million, or 47 cents per share, a year ago.

Excluding special items, it earned 2 cents per share.

Net sales rose 11 percent to $265.6 million.

Analysts on average had expected earnings of 27 cents per share, on revenue of $269 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

For the second quarter, the company guided a range of a loss of 4 cents per share to a profit of 6 cents per share, on revenue of $260 million to 280 million.

Analysts were projecting breakeven, on revenue of $275.52 million for the second quarter.

Shares of the company were trading up 3 percent at $5.56 after the bell. They closed at $5.38 Monday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Mansi Dutta in Bangalore; Editing by Gopakumar Warrier)
