Japan service sector sentiment improves in Jan

TOKYO Feb 8 (Reuters) - Japan's service sector sentiment index rose to 38.8 in January, a Cabinet Office survey showed on Monday, backed by government stimulus aimed at preventing a double-dip recession.

The survey of workers such as taxi drivers, hotel employees and restaurant staff -- called "economy watchers" for their proximity to consumer and retail trends -- showed their confidence about current economic conditions increased from 35.4 in December.

The Cabinet Office started compiling the data in comparative form in August 2001.

The outlook index, indicating the level of confidence in future conditions, rose to 41.9 from 36.3 in December. (Reporting by Rie Ishiguro)
