Spain, Italy discuss Telecom Italia-Telefonica

MADRID | Tue Feb 9, 2010 12:48pm EST

MADRID Feb 9 (Reuters) - Spain's Industry Minister said on Tuesday he had discussed a reported takeover by Spain's Telefonica (TEF.MC) of Telecom Italia (TLIT.MI) with his Italian counterpart.

"I was lucky enough at dinner to sit next to the minister Claudio Scajola, the Italian minister (for industry), and we spoke of many matters," Miguel Sebastian told a news conference in San Sebastian.

"It's true that he mentioned the subject of Telefonica and Telecom Italia and I passed on the position of the Spanish government that it neither intervenes, nor interferes, nor gives an opinion about business deals."

Media reports have said Telefonica, which has a stake in Telecom Italia though a consortium, could seek to take control of the company if the Italian government gives its blessing. (Reporting by Jonathan Gleave and Sarah Morris)
