MEXICO CITY Feb 11 (Reuters) - Mexico's state oil company Pemex said on Thursday it shut down a unit at its Minatitlan, Veracruz refinery on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico after a fire Thursday morning.

The fire was quickly controlled by the refinery's own fire fighters, Pemex said. The unit that was shut down as a precaution, which Pemex described as a "Charge Preparation Unit," is to be restarted once inspections are completed, Pemex said.

The Minatitlan refinery is rated at 162,000 barrels per day and it supplies refined products to markets along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Pemex is currently upgrading the facility to expand processing capacity and increase the production of cleaner fuels. (Reporting by Robert Campbell; Editing by David Gregorio)
