MEXICO CITY, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Latin American telecommunications operator Telmex Internacional, controlled by tycoon Carlos Slim, posted a 58 percent rise in fourth-quarter net profit on Thursday, more than analysts had expected.

Telmex Internacional, known as Telint TELINTL.MX, said its net profit in the quarter was 1.98 billion pesos ($150 million).

Analysts polled by Reuters had expected Telint's earnings to rise 48 percent on average.

Reacting to tougher competition in the region, Slim unveiled a $21 billion plan last month to shift control of his Mexican fixed-line operator, Telmex (TELMEXL.MX), and regional operator Telint into his flagship America Movil (AMXL.MX).

Slim plans to absorb Telint into America Movil, the largest cellphone operator in Latin America, and delist the operator from the stock exchange.

Telint's revenues grew to 25.7 billion pesos in the quarter, up 32 percent over the year-ago period and slightly below expectations.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization were 6.4 billion pesos, up 47 percent and in line with analysts' expectations.

In a $16 billion spin-off, Slim created Telint in mid-2008 as a vehicle for the non-Mexican assets of Telmex.

As well as Brazil, Telint has phone, cable TV and Internet operations in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
