UPDATE 1-ITC rules against Whirlpool in LG patent suit
* Whirlpool had accused LG of infringing five patents
* Four were subsequently withdrawn
* Patents have to do with some refrigerator ice bins
WASHINGTON, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Whirlpool Corp (WHR.N), the world's top appliance maker, lost a patent fight with LG Electronics (066570.KS) in a trade court on Friday as the two battle for the premium U.S. appliance market.
The International Trade Commission upheld a decision by one of its judges, which had ruled that LG's method of storing ice for dispensers in the doors of side-by-side refrigerators did not infringe a Whirlpool patent.
Whirlpool had initially accused LG of infringing five patents but withdrew four of them from the lawsuit.
LG has filed its own lawsuit against Whirlpool in a district court in Delaware. It is seeking monetary damages and an injunction. The case is scheduled for trial in March 2010, according to a posting on the LG website.
It filed a similar case in New Jersey. (Reporting by Diane Bartz)
