WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Alexander Haig, who died Saturday at age 85, was a U.S. Army General who served in the administrations of Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan and ran for president himself in 1988.

Here are key positions Haig held during his career.

* Named assistant to Defense Secretary Robert McNamara in 1962

* Appointed National Security Council deputy to Henry Kissinger in 1969

* Army vice chief of staff for four months in 1973

* White House chief of staff to Richard Nixon during the Watergate scandal, 1973-1974

* NATO commander, 1974-1979

* President Ronald Reagan's secretary of state for 18 months in 1981 and 1982; replaced by George Shultz

* Ran for president in 1988 but dropped out of the race for Republican nomination when he was running last in the polls
