Wave of new detentions sends Turk lira/stocks down

ISTANBUL | Fri Feb 26, 2010 8:07am EST

ISTANBUL Feb 26 (Reuters) - Turkish stocks and the lira lost morning gains on Friday after Turkish broadcaster CNN Turk reported authorities had detained 17 more active officers and one retired officer.

The main Istanbul share index .XU100 reversed early gains to trade 0.2 percent lower at 1300 GMT having earlier risen more than one percent, while the lira weakened to 1.5445 from a level of 1.5415 prior to news of the detentions.

Turkish markets have fallen this week on fears of a confrontation between the government and the military.

"The day started well but markets are following the political tension and the second wave of detentions had a negative effect on the markets," a foreign-exchange trader in Istanbul said. (Reporting by Alexandra Hudson and Nevzat Devranoglu)
