USGS says magnitude 6.4 quake hits Taiwan

WASHINGTON, March 3 (Reuters) - A magnitude 6.4 quake hit Taiwan, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on Wednesday.

It said the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.5, was 21.7 miles (35 km) deep, relatively shallow, and was centered 21 miles (33 km) northwest of T'ai-tung.

The quake struck at 8:18 a.m. (0018 GMT) on Thursday. (Reporting by Sandra Maler; Editing by Peter Cooney)
