NEW YORK, March 8 (Reuters) - Southern Co (SO.N) shut the 1,127-megawatt Unit 2 at the Vogtle nuclear power station in Georgia on Sunday for planned refueling and maintenance, a spokeswoman for the plant said Monday.

She could not say when the unit would return to service but noted the company did not have any major overhauls planned for this outage. Electricity traders guessed the unit would return in about a month.

It last shut from Sept. 14 to Oct. 20, 2008, and is on an 18-month refueling cycle.

Vogtle is located in Waynesboro in Burke County about 170 miles (273 km) east of Atlanta. (Reporting by Scott DiSavino; Editing by Lisa Shumaker)
